Diane Brown has been fascinated by owls for many years, but had never thought much about keeping owls. That is until she discovered a baby barn owl at a steam fair in July 2004 that was captive bred and had no home to go to. When she asked what would happen to it she was told ‘if no home could be found it would more than likely be put down’. Diane could not let that happen and after a discussion with George her husband, they decided that they would look after it. The decision was the easy part, actually looking after the owl was a very large learning curve. The owl was called Bernie, and was spoilt from the start. After a few months Diane and George became good friends with Andrew Charlton at Berkley Owls and after receiving some good advice and, they took in a snowy owl that was stressed and started to care for him. From that moment on things became more serious and it was not long before they joined with Andrew and seriously started to rescue and rehabilitate all sorts of owls from all sorts of situations. It was not long before the number of owls they looked after had grown and in 2006 decided that they should get involved more with the owls by bringing them out to meet and educate the public. They set up Berkley Owls Team 2 and started displaying the owls at various events and shows. In December of 2007 Diane, George and Andrew had a meeting and it was determined that with all the commitments that both teams had, and the areas of operation for the teams, Team 2 would change its name to Hoots Owls and become an associated partner to Berkley Owls and Andrew would remain as a consultant and friend to them.
Diane is pleased to bring you Hoots Owls, where you will be treated to a magnificent display of owls from all over the word from the first owl Bernie to our latest addition Terry, a Tawny Owl, injured in a road accident. You will be amazed at the sheer beauty, elegance and friendliness of some of the world’s most graceful and stunning birds, as you interact with them and get up close, you will see for yourself just what makes these birds so precious.
Diane would like to thank you for taking the time to visit our site and would like to hear from any school, community group, organisation or event organiser who would like us to visit and talk about our owls and the work we do or to ask us to bring the owls to an event.
