Poppy the European Eagle Owl
(Bubo bubo)
About Poppy
When poppy came to us she was 18 months old and had been abused by her owner who had beaten her with a stick so he could feed her. She is a very untrusting owl who needs to regain her confidence in people. Since being with us she has now learnt that not all people are cruel and she has began to settle down allowing us to feed her by hand and get close. A stunning bird that needs to be treated with a lot of respect.
Description of the European Eagle Owl
The largest species of owl in the world, this owl has prominent ear tufts and vivid orange eyes. It has buff-brown upper-parts, heavily marked with black and a grey(ish) facial disk. Under-parts paler buff-brown with black streaks and a white throat. The colour of these owls varies depending on location, becoming paler as you move eastwards in the northern parts of the range up to western Siberia, then progressively darker to Pacific coast. The size of the bird also decreases throughout Europe from East to West, and North to South.
